Nairobi United set sights on defending FKF Cup as sponsorship boosts tournament

Nairobi United are preparing to defend the Football Kenya Federation  (FKF) Cup title with renewed ambition, fueled by a surge in both prize money and visibility.

This follows the renewal of Mozzart Bet Kenya’s sponsorship of the country’s second-most prestigious football tournament.

Coach Godfrey ‘Solo’ Oduor spoke confidently on Thursday, hours after the 2026 edition of the FKF Cup was officially launched at the Glee Hotel along the Northern Bypass. They will kick off their lofty campaign against Malindi sub-county FKF league champions L-15.

“We are not here to make up the numbers. We are here to win again,” Solo said. “Last year’s victory gave the team belief. That confidence is what we will build on.”

Nairobi United stunned Kenyan giants Gor Mahia in last year’s final, claiming their first-ever senior-level trophy on June 29, 2025.

Reflecting on that triumph, Solo said, “Beating Gor Mahia in that final proved we can compete with anyone. It was a historic moment for this club, and our ambition now is to prove it wasn’t a one-time miracle.”

The FKF Cup, celebrating its 70th edition, received a significant financial injection with Mozzart Bet’s renewed three-year deal, now valued at Sh90 million, up from Sh60 million.

The gaming firm will contribute Sh30 million annually, a Sh10 million increase from the previous sponsorship, a move widely seen as strengthening the competition’s stature.

Solo welcomed the sponsorship boost, noting its effect on players’ motivation. “The increase in prize money is huge. Players now have even more reason to push themselves,” he said. “When your efforts are rewarded on this scale, every match becomes more meaningful.”

The new prize structure sees the FKF Cup champion take home Sh3 million, up from Sh2 million, while runners-up will receive Sh2 million. Third-placed teams will earn Sh1.5 million, and fourth-place teams will now pocket Sh1 million.

For the first time, the tournament also offers Sh8.4 million in bonuses for individual performances, including awards for best goalkeeper, top scorer, best midfielder, and best defender in each match. The most promising young talent, and the overall Most Valuable Player, will also benefit from the awards.

“I am thrilled by this focus on individual brilliance,” Solo said. “It encourages players to be daring and creative. Young talents now have a real chance to shine and make a name for themselves.”

Broadcasting also received a boost, with Mozzart Bet allocating Sh5 million to enhance live coverage. “More fans across the country can now follow every moment. Even those who cannot attend will feel part of the action,” Solo said. On the sporting front, Solo emphasised a combination of experience and preparation as the secret to defending the trophy.

“We are building on the squad that won last year while adding depth and quality. Every player knows the standards expected of them,” he said. “Teamwork, discipline, and consistency will guide us through this tournament.”

Mental strength, Solo added, will be crucial in knockout competition. “Anything can happen in these matches. It’s not just about skills; it’s about focus and composure. We need to be ready for every challenge,” he said.

The FKF Cup draw for the Round of 64, conducted during the launch, set the stage for what promises to be a competitive tournament.

Mozzart Bet’s renewed sponsorship will cover organisation, live-streaming, branding, and logistics, creating a platform for higher-quality football and greater fan engagement.

Gor Mahia still holds the record for most FKF Cup titles with eight trophies, with AFC Leopards close behind with seven. Yet Solo remained undeterred. “Records are for history books. Our focus is on making history ourselves,” he said. Looking beyond national glory, Solo emphasised the broader significance of the competition.

“The FKF Cup is a pathway to continental football. The winner earns a place in the CAF Confederation Cup. Playing at that level is every player’s dream, and that is what we are chasing—representing Nairobi United and Kenya on the continental stage.”

With increased stakes, new individual awards, and live coverage expanding the Cup’s reach, Nairobi United enters the 2026 edition determined to prove that last year’s victory was no fluke. “Our ambition is simple,” Solo said.

“We want to lift the Cup again. Everyone in this club believes it is possible. We will respect every opponent, but we will fear no one. The fire in this team is burning brighter than ever.”

The event was graced by FKF president Hussein Mohammed, Mozzart Bet director Musa Sirma, FKF National Executive Committee (NEC) members and representatives of the participating clubs.
