From Sh1 Million Loss to Governor’s Visit: The Incredible Turnaround of Nakuru’s Tule Kienyeji

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika made a special visit to Tule Kienyeji Restaurant on Thursday, January 22, after the eatery gained national attention following a viral social-media plea by its owner, Harriet Akinyi.

The restaurant, located along Maasai Avenue in Nakuru’s Central Business District, had struggled for months with minimal customer turnout despite a significant personal investment from Akinyi.

In a heartfelt video posted on TikTok, she explained that she had invested over KSh 1 million in setting up the business and was battling daily operational costs with almost no customers.

Within hours of Akinyi’s video circulating online, Kenyans nationwide responded with an outpouring of support.

Residents, many inspired by the viral post, began visiting the restaurant in large numbers, encouraging friends and family to do the same.

Some patrons travelled from neighbouring counties, while others brought food supplies and donations to help restock the kitchen.

During her visit, Governor Kihika was warmly received by staff and customers.

She greeted those present before engaging Akinyi in a conversation about the business’s challenges and exploring possible ways to support its long-term success.

Akinyi’s emotional appeal told a story of the difficult reality many small business owners face — especially in times of economic pressure.

Her video not only shed light on her own struggles but also resonated with Kenyans who could relate to the hurdles of entrepreneurship in today’s economy.

Since going viral, the restaurant has become a symbol of community support and solidarity.

Thousands of Kenyans have shared the story on social media, and well-wishers have contributed to Akinyi’s cause — including sending money via mobile transfers that have raised over KSh 200,000 to help cover debts and operating costs.

Support hasn’t stopped at increased foot traffic: local influencers and celebrities, such as comedian Professor Hamo, visited the restaurant to show encouragement, further boosting its visibility.

Customers praised the food as affordable and delicious, and described their visits as opportunities not just to eat, but to support a fellow Kenyan in need.

“Good service, good food, good ambiance and a good country to do one thing asanti,” Governor Kihika commented.

As the story continues to unfold, many are calling for the momentum to be sustained — with hopes that the restaurant remains bustling long after the viral moment fades
