Last dance! Mané hints at AFCON exit

Senegal talisman Sadio Mané has hinted that his glittering Africa Cup of Nations journey has come to an end, describing the just-concluded tournament as his “last dance” at AFCON.

Speaking to the press after Senegal’s dramatic triumph, the former Liverpool star struck an emotional tone as he reflected on his future with the national team.

“Unfortunately, this is my last dance [at AFCON], but I will be the 12th man to support them,” Mané said, signalling that while his days on the AFCON pitch may be over, his commitment to the Lions of Teranga remains unwavering.

Mané, who has played a crucial leadership role throughout the tournament, said African football deserved better organisation and officiating, particularly after the chaotic scenes that marked the final.

Despite the challenges, he maintained an optimistic outlook on the continent’s game.

“African football deserves more than this,” he said, while praising the steady progress being made across the continent.

According to Mané, the quality, competitiveness and global respect for African football have grown significantly in recent years.

“African football is developing incredibly,” he added, noting that more African players are now excelling at the highest levels globally and raising the profile of the game back home.

Senegal icon Sadio Mané was widely hailed for his leadership and composure during a chaotic AFCON final, with fans, teammates and pundits praising his influence in steering the Lions of Teranga through one of the most turbulent endings the tournament has witnessed.

As tempers flared in the dying minutes of regulation time following a controversial penalty decision in favour of hosts Morocco, Mané emerged as the calming force within a visibly agitated Senegal side.

While players surrounded match officials and some headed toward the tunnel in protest, the veteran forward stayed behind, appealing to his teammates to remain composed and allow the match to continue.

Television footage later showed Mané gesturing emphatically, urging restraint at a moment when the final threatened to descend into abandonment.

His actions were seen as pivotal in preventing further escalation.

Even as boos rained down from the stands, Mané continued to encourage his teammates, reminding them of what was at stake.

When Senegal eventually returned to the pitch, his leadership helped refocus the side just in time for goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s crucial save from Brahim Diaz’s penalty — a turning point that swung momentum decisively in Senegal’s favour.

Beyond the dramatic finale, Mané’s contribution throughout the match was also lauded.

After the final whistle, tributes poured in across social media and broadcast platforms, with many describing Mané as the embodiment of leadership on the biggest stage.
