David Kato grew up in a small town in Kampala, Uganda, where he always felt like he was behind. Throughout his school years, no matter how hard he tried, he was always at the bottom of his class. He struggled with his studies, and while other kids seemed to excel effortlessly, David felt like he was always one step behind. Teachers often criticized him for not applying himself, and classmates looked down on him for his poor grades.
