Kibera Soccer Women captain Essie Akida says the club is approaching the run-in of the FKF Women’s Premier League with renewed belief following a timely two-week break ahead of their clash against Kisped Queens this weekend.
Akida said the pause allowed the squad to reset both physically and mentally as they prepare for the final stretch of the campaign, with 11 matches remaining.
She maintained that the team’s philosophy remains unchanged—taking one game at a time. “We are focused on improving our efficiency in front of the goal. Football is decided by chances, and being clinical has defined our wins this season,” Akida said.
She admitted that missed opportunities had proved costly in some fixtures but noted that the team has taken those lessons on board as they look ahead to the remaining matches.
Despite the challenges, Kibera have shown their ability to compete with top sides, highlighted by a convincing 4–1 victory over Kenya Police just before the Christmas break.
Akida also opened up on her prolonged wait for clearance from the Football Kenya Federation, describing the delay as frustrating and disappointing.
However, she remains hopeful of featuring either in this weekend’s match or the one that follows. “With the transfer window open, it has been difficult, but I have continued training with the team and honouring my contract,” she said.
“I’m also doing my part off the pitch by guiding a young squad and sharing experience that is vital in women’s football.”
Head coach George Okallo echoed the captain’s optimism, reflecting on a first leg where Kibera dropped points in matches they should have won.
He attributed some of the setbacks—particularly in away fixtures—to fatigue, while stressing that performances remained competitive. “Our focus now is sharper finishing and better game management,” Okallo said.
He added that the technical bench has been encouraged by an improving injury situation and believes the squad is close to full strength.
Okallo confirmed that preparations are in top gear for this weekend’s encounter against Kisped Queens, where Kibera will be chasing maximum points as part of their one-game-at-a-time approach.
