President William Ruto has hinted at the possibility of forming a political alliance with the ODM party as he prepares to defend his seat in the 2027 general election.
Ruto indicated that he is open to working with ODM by establishing a pact ahead of the elections.
Since the death of former ODM leader Raila Odinga, questions have arisen over the political direction the party may take in 2027.
Some ODM elected leaders have expressed reservations about supporting President Ruto’s re-election bid.
The current ODM leader, Oburu Oginga, has repeatedly stated that the party’s engagement with President Ruto is limited to the broad-based government framework until 2027.
“ODM should get ready and form a pact with us so that we go to 2027 as a team. UDA and Kenya Kwanza are also ready to join hands and form a government with you and make Kenya a first-world country,” Ruto said.
Speaking at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay town during the Genowa Governor’s Cup, an annual tournament organised by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga on Sunday, Ruto said preparations were underway to put modalities in place for a potential new political alliance.
He noted that his party, UDA, is working on a roadmap that could see a coalition with ODM, while urging ODM leaders to focus on strengthening their party to form a competitive political force.
Ruto added that he is also consolidating UDA and the Kenya Kwanza Alliance to enhance their prospects in the 2027 elections.
He called on his opponents to campaign on development agendas rather than fostering hostility or personal attacks.
“Let them sell their agenda to Kenyans. They should stop campaigning on abstract issues that do not add value to the lives of Kenyans,” he said.
Ruto further emphasised that voters will focus on development achievements rather than a candidate’s personal attributes.
“Some vying for the presidency have served in government for decades, yet have made limited impact. We don’t want unnecessary distractions in the name of campaigns,” he said.
Oburu, who was present, expressed willingness to collaborate with Ruto through the broad-based government framework.
“As ODM, we will work within the broad-based government until 2027 to support President Ruto. We also hope to form the next government together from the start,” Oburu said.
Governor Wanga urged residents to support unity within ODM and reject attempts to fragment the party ahead of the elections.
