Kenyan referee Kamaku to officiate Angola vs Zimbabwe AFCON clash

Kenyan referee Peter Waweru Kamaku has been handed another major assignment at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Kamaku has been selected to officiate the Group B clash between Angola and Zimbabwe on Boxing Day in Morocco.

The match will be played at the Marrakech Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 3.30pm local time.

Kamaku will lead an experienced officiating team that includes fellow Kenyans Gilbert Kipkoech as the first assistant referee and Stephen Yiembe as the second assistant referee.

Mustapha Kechchaf has been named the fourth official for the encounter, while Hamza El Fariq will oversee duties as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

He will be assisted by Abdalaziz Yasir Ahmed Abdalaziz as the first assistant VAR official, with Yahya Hadaqa serving as the referee assessor.

The appointment marks another milestone in Kamaku’s refereeing career.

This will be the second high-profile AFCON tournament he has officiated since making his debut in the competition in 2019.

During that tournament, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) entrusted him with officiating the final Group D match between Namibia and Ivory Coast.

Kamaku is a senior lecturer at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pure Mathematics.

The Angola versus Zimbabwe fixture is crucial for both teams, who are seeking to bounce back after defeats in their opening Group B matches.

Angola began their campaign with a narrow 2–1 loss to South Africa at the same Marrakech Stadium.

Bafana Bafana took the lead through Oswin Appollis before Angola equalised courtesy of Show. However, South Africa sealed the victory in the 79th minute when Lyle Foster found the back of the net.

Zimbabwe, on the other hand, suffered a heartbreaking 2–1 defeat to Egypt in their AFCON opener played in Agadir.

The Warriors stunned the seven-time African champions by taking an early lead through Prince Dube, raising hopes of a positive start to their campaign.

However, Egypt rallied back with a goal from Omar Marmoush before captain Mohamed Salah struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to hand the Pharaohs all three points.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is being staged in Morocco from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026, bringing together 24 national teams from across the continent.

The teams are divided into six groups. Group A features hosts Morocco alongside Mali, Zambia and Comoros, while Group B comprises Egypt, South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe. Group C includes Nigeria, Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania, Group D has Senegal, DR Congo, Benin and Botswana, Group E features Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea and Sudan, and Group F consists of Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon and Mozambique.

The tournament kicked off with Morocco edging Comoros 2–0 in the opening match, setting the tone for the hosts’ campaign.
