Police are investigating an incident where a 17-year-old girl was found dead after she drowned in a river in Kambiti area, Murang’a County.

According to police, the incident occurred on Friday in the Masiana River, where the girl had gone to fetch firewood with her friends.

Her body was later moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

Officers said they were yet to establish the circumstances under which the teenager drowned and confirmed that they were interviewing the two friends who were with her at the time.

Police said the questioning was part of ongoing efforts to piece together what transpired during the incident.

In another incident, an 18-year-old fisherman drowned in Ndigwa, Madiany, Rarieda in Siaya County while fishing at Gudwa Beach on Lake Victoria.

Police said the incident took place on Friday, and the young man’s body was retrieved on Sunday afternoon after a search.

Investigations are underway to determine the sequence of events that may have led to the fatality, with officers noting that no conclusions had been drawn yet.

Police said at least five people were killed in separate drowning incidents reported across the country over the weekend.

The series of cases has renewed concern about public safety along rivers, beaches and other water bodies, particularly during times when communities frequently interact with them for domestic, recreational or economic activities.

Meanwhile, authorities in Ainamoi, Kericho County, are investigating an electrocution case that claimed the life of 18-year-old Evans Kipkurui.

According to police, Kipkurui was harvesting avocado fruits at a homestead using a fresh bamboo stick when he accidentally came into contact with a live Kenya Power and Lighting Company cable.

The cable runs close to the avocado trees.

Kipkurui was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body was later taken to the mortuary as police and Kenya Power officials visited the scene to support ongoing investigations into the incident.

A second electrocution incident was reported in Nangili, Kakamega County, where a woman identified as Silvia Nekesa died on Saturday.

Police said Nekesa, who had been hired for house chores, was electrocuted while airing clothes.

According to preliminary findings by police and Kenya Power officials, the clothesline she was using had been connected to a live electrical wire through a metallic pole that also held a security bulb.

Nekesa was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Her body was transferred to the mortuary pending an autopsy and further investigations.

In the Kawaida area of Karuri, Kiambu County, a man died after an attack by unknown assailants.

Police identified the victim as Stephen Koloni, 37, who succumbed to his injuries in hospital ten days after the assault.

Two suspects have been arrested and, according to police, will face murder charges.

Koloni’s body was moved to the mortuary on November 28 pending an autopsy.

Police say murder cases have been rising even as investigations continue, noting that some incidents are linked to disputes, including those involving personal relationships.
