Comedian Sammy Kioko has announced he is stepping back from pursuing a prolonged debt payment issue with the Machakos County Government.
Kioko confirmed that his sister, who recently underwent initial treatment in India, will now take over the difficult task of following up on the outstanding payment.
The comedian made the candid revelation to content creator Rick Be Tv at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). This interview took place moments after Kioko and his sister landed back in Kenya following their medical trip.
A Costly Return from Treatment
Kioko had travelled to India earlier this week for his sister’s treatment. He confirmed that some procedures were performed while they were there.
He praised the Indian healthcare system, describing it as “very good”. The pair spent almost seven days under care before being discharged. However, the treatment is not yet complete.
The comedian explained that the decision to return to Kenya immediately was necessary due to the high costs associated with being abroad.
“We really wanted her to complete her medication while we were there, but because of one or two things, we couldn’t. We were discharged yesterday and decided to travel back because you know, when you’re abroad, there are a lot of things, you also spend a lot,” he said.
He confirmed that his sister needs to return to India to complete the remaining treatment procedures.
Fans have been crucial to their journey, acting as their “greatest pillar” by offering financial aid and encouraging messages.
The Burden of Unpaid Debt
The financial strain is exacerbated by the protracted conflict over payment owed by Machakos County. Kioko suggested he has reached a breaking point, noting that the ongoing struggle is exhausting him.
He expressed a desire for the issue to end so he can focus on moving forward with his life. Kioko stated that every morning he wakes up, he only thinks about this single issue, which has stalled his personal progress.
He believes that he might be the reason for the County’s lack of response. He speculated that the County perhaps does not want to speak to him or see him because he is “Sammy Kioko”.
The comedian emphasised that the debt pertains to work completed.
“It’s work that has been done; it’s work that is finished. These are things we have dedicated ourselves to day and night,” Kioko said.
The Sister Takes Over
To break the deadlock, Kioko announced that his sister, who had previously followed up on the matter, would resume the pursuit. He stated that he wants to “stand aside for a little while” and watch her handle the follow-up.
“So hata kama ako mgonjwa vile umeona na condition yake but unajua tunasema lisilobudi hubidi tu. Na kama itafurahisha kaunti yeye akifuatilia ikiwa hivo na wamlipe sawa tu, sababu mwisho wa siku tu wakilipa itakuwa tu sawa na hii mambo yote ikiisha ndio itakuwa hata sawa zaidi.”
Kioko believes that if the County will be placated by her involvement, then they should proceed. The primary goal remains the money, which is needed for the sister’s medical care.
Even though his sister is sick and in her current condition, Kioko intends to ensure that family or friends drive her to the County offices to pursue the payment.
He hopes that by setting pride and selfishness aside, and appealing to “humanity,” the County will help. If they help her, they will be helping many people, including the Kioko family, their employees, and covering critical medical expenses.
“Labda ni Kioko ndio shida, nataka tu nisimame kando kidogo tu niangalie tu yeye aende labda afuate tu tuone kama mambo yake itaharakishwa.”
Kioko ended his remarks with an appeal to the County to act with humanity and justice. He urged supporters to continue praying for their situation.
“We are suffering a lot. I feel worse because as a young man, I feel bad when I see that we are not even being listened to,” he admitted.
