President William Ruto has urged Kenyans living and working abroad to channel their investments into secure and verifiable projects back home. President William Ruto speaking to Kenyans working and living in Doha. He specifically encouraged them to consider purchasing units under the Affordable Housing Programme, rather than falling victim to fraudulent schemes often orchestrated by friends or relatives. The president cited numerous cases where diaspora members discovered they had been conned after sending money for developments that never existed. He noted that many of these scams involve trusted individuals who falsely claim progress on housing projects and repeatedly request additional funds, only for the owners to later find out that the house for which they were sending money doesn’t exist.
“We want to see how we can support you to invest back home. And help you structure that investment. We are in the final stages of a diaspora bond on how people in the diaspora can support Kenya. That also gives you an investment income. So again, I think this is some of the outcomes of what we had as the diaspora conference that we had in Nairobi, I think a year and a half ago. And we are in the final stages with the cabinet. Then, finally, we will create a framework that you can participate in. And that is aside from all the other things that we are doing, including the affordable housing programme, where, instead of you now struggling to send money to some contractor or your relative, you can now buy affordable housing. You don’t have to struggle with who is the contractor and who is what. You have the undertaking of the government of Kenya that whatever house you buy, you will get it. Different from if you send to your friend or your relative, you will find that they will keep sending you pictures of the neighbor’s house. I think there are many experiences of that kind, right? So again, you know, there are those opportunities which you can tap into, and we can all take that forward,” he said.
