The United States has issued a Level 3 travel advisory, urging its citizens to reconsider travel to Tanzania.
In the advisory released on Friday, the US Embassy cited concerns over unrest, crime, terrorism, and risks faced by LGBTQ+ individuals.
It noted that travellers could face heightened risks in some areas due to unpredictable demonstrations, limited police capacity to respond to serious crime, and reports of harassment targeting LGBTQ+ people.
“Reconsider travel to Tanzania due to unrest, crime, terrorism, and targeting of gay and lesbian individuals. Some areas have increased risk,” the advisory stated.
The Embassy noted that demonstrations in Tanzania can occur in response to political or economic issues and may be unpredictable.
Authorities have increased security in some areas through roadblocks, checkpoints, and visible police presence.
The government also sometimes limits or denies authorisation for large gatherings, a measure that has raised concerns among rights groups regarding restrictions on assembly.
The advisory highlighted that violent crime occurs in parts of Tanzania, including incidents such as assault, robbery, sexual assault, mugging, and carjacking.
“Local police have limited resources to respond effectively to serious crime,” the Embassy said.
Travellers were advised to remain vigilant, avoid walking alone at night, and exercise caution, including in tourist areas.
The advisory also mentioned a continuing threat of terrorism, particularly in the Mtwara Region near the border with Mozambique, and cautioned that public areas, government facilities, and popular tourist locations could be potential targets.
Travellers were encouraged to review the US Department of State’s country reports on terrorism and maintain awareness of their surroundings.
Concerns regarding LGBTQ+ individuals were also highlighted. The advisory states that people who identify as gay or lesbian may face harassment or other forms of targeting.
Travellers were advised to avoid public displays of affection and exercise discretion regarding their sexual orientation.
The US government recommends that travellers enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive updates and alerts.
It also advised having an emergency evacuation plan, staying informed through local media, and being prepared to adjust travel plans as needed. Additional guidance includes precautions such as not leaving food or drinks unattended and reviewing health-related information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The Level 3 advisory places Tanzania among countries where the US strongly discourages nonessential travel.
The warning comes amid reports of unrest following the Tanzanian general elections held on Wednesday.
