It was a triumphant Sunday for Kenyan rugby as both the national men’s and women’s sevens teams, Shujaa and the Lionesses, swept the titles at the 2025 Safari 7s held at the Nyayo National Stadium.
The back-to-back victories mark a significant milestone for Kenyan rugby, reaffirming the country’s dominance in the regional sevens circuit and showcasing the depth of talent in both squads.
Both teams displayed exceptional skill, discipline, and teamwork over the weekend to claim their respective championships, igniting jubilant scenes among the home crowd.
Shujaa road to the Safari 7s finals
Shujaa, remained on course to defending their Safari 7s title after delivering a commanding performance in the quarterfinals on Sunday, October 12, at Nyayo Stadium.
The hosts were in ruthless form, brushing aside Nyati RFC with a 40–0 win to storm into the semifinals.Shujaa made their intentions clear early in the match, with Chrissant Ojwang muscling through Nyati’s defense to open the scoring. Nygel Amaitsa converted successfully to give the hosts the lead.
Moments later, George Ooro showcased impressive skill before offloading to Dennis Abukuse, who crossed the line for the second try, which Amaitsa again converted.The second half saw Shujaa tighten their grip on the match as Abukuse grabbed his second try, set up by Amaitsa, before Floyd Wabwire, Patrick Odongo, and Festus Shiasi each dotted down to complete the rout. Amaitsa was flawless with the boot, converting most of the tries to seal a 40–0 full-time score.
