Kakamega: Women Empowerment Drive Beneficiaries Cautioned Against Using the Money to Buy Wigs

Government-allied politicians have been hosting what they have described as women’s empowerment drives for the last few months. Likuyani MP Hon. Innocent Mugabe at a recent event in his constituency.  The drives are often held at the constituency level, where money is contributed and later shared among women’s and youth groups. How much was raised during the Likuyani empowerment drive? In Kakamega, Likuyani is one of the constituencies that has already hosted the drive. During the event graced by President William Ruto’s personal assistant (PA), Farouk Kibet, over KSh 8 million was contributed. . Each group in the constituency will get KSh 80,000 from the total collected.

Speaking during the handing over of the money to one of the women’s groups, Likuyani Member of Parliament Innocent Mugabe challenged members to use it wisely. He cautioned against using the money to buy wigs. “Msinunue wigs na hii pesa ya chama (don’t use this money to buy wigs),” Mugabe jokingly said. “Utilise this money well to better your life and not to finance your fancy lifestyle. There are many projects you can invest in, like microfinancing and selling chicks to farmers in villages,” he added. The legislator also dismissed politicians who have been criticising the empowerment drives. He noted that many Kenyans had benefited from the initiative, contrary to what politicians opposed to it were attempting to portray. “All the empowerment programs are real. Let us not fall into the politics of lies that they are fake,” the MP said. He also asked locals to form groups to benefit from the many government initiatives. According to the MP, the government is willing to offer support to all Kenyans as long as they are in organised groups.

“Let us form groups so that we can get funds to uplift our lives. The government has a lot of money, and to get it, you must be in a group,” Mugabe said. How Likuyani groups plan to invest the empowerment drive money The legislator spoke as he handed KSh 80,000 to the Machine Self-Help Group from Namunyiri sub-location in Sinoko ward. Members of the Machine Self-Help Group in Likuyani which received KSh 80,000 from the empowerment drive. The group has already planned to buy a sheep or goat for every member using the money, while the remaining portion will go towards opening a business. 110 groups in the constituency received the money collected from the empowerment drive.
