Nairobi’s KSh2 billion Greenpark pedestrian underpass 97% complete, promises safer and faster city travel

The construction of the Nairobi Greenpark Terminus Pedestrian Underpass at the busy Haile Selassie–Uhuru Highway roundabout is almost complete, with progress now at 97 percent.

On Thursday, 2nd October 2025, members of the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure toured the site and lauded the project as a game-changer in decongesting the capital.

The KSh2 billion facility, funded through the Road Maintenance Levy Fund, is being built by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) under the supervision of Civil One Consulting Engineers Ltd.

Stretching 500 metres, the underground walkway is designed to improve pedestrian movement across major routes such as Mombasa Road, Upper Hill, Westlands, and the Nairobi Railway Terminus.

Once open, it is expected to serve over 21,000 people every day, easing traffic conflicts and significantly improving safety.

The underpass has been fitted with modern features to guarantee convenience and security. These include seven standby generators, a water pumping system for drainage, CCTV surveillance, and a police post.

To make it accessible to all users, elevators will cater for people with disabilities, the elderly, and expectant mothers.

In addition to transport efficiency, the facility is expected to support economic activity through 39 commercial spaces, including shops, billboards, and rental outlets that will generate revenue.

According to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the final touches remaining include installing elevators, completing electrical and mechanical systems, setting up CCTV, interior finishing, landscaping, and connecting utilities.

Once commissioned, the Greenpark underpass will not only make pedestrian travel safer but also cut commuting time, reduce congestion, and strengthen Nairobi’s overall transport infrastructure.
