Metro Group denies SHA chair’s ownership of Ladnan Hospital

Metro Group has denied claims that Dr. Abdi Mohamed, the chairperson of the Social Health Authority (SHA), owns or holds any stake in Ladnan Hospital in Pangani, Nairobi.

In a statement issued by Dr Kanyenje Gakombe, Chief Executive Officer of Metro Group PLC, the company clarified that Mohamed sold his stake in 2023 and has not played any role in the ownership, management, or operations of the facility since then.

“Dr Mohamed was one of the original founders of Ladnan Hospital but sold his entire stake in Metropolitan Hospital Holdings Limited in July 2023,” Gakombe stated.

Gakombe emphasised that Ladnan Hospital is fully owned by Metro Group through its subsidiary, Metropolitan Hospital Holdings Limited, which in turn is wholly owned by TMG, a public unlisted company with over 500 shareholders.

The CEO further noted that the hospital’s current ownership structure and governance can be independently verified through CR12 filings with the Registrar of Companies, which confirm TMG as the sole shareholder of Metropolitan Hospital Holdings Limited.

“The governance of Ladnan Hospital Limited falls under the full and sole authority of The Metro Group PLC’s board,” the statement added, asserting the company’s commitment to integrity, transparency, and professionalism in all its operations.

The clarification comes amid media reports suggesting that Ladnan Hospital has received at least Sh195 million in payments since the Social Health Authority began operations in October 2024.

The reports, citing data from the Rural and Urban Private Hospitals Association of Kenya (RUPHA), raised concerns over a potential conflict of interest due to Mohamed’s past involvement with the hospital.

Metro Group has dismissed the allegations as misinformed and misleading, stating that any suggestions of impropriety or undue influence linked to the SHA chair are unfounded.

“TMG operates independently and adheres to the highest standards of corporate governance. The continued insinuation of Dr. Mohamed’s involvement is not only incorrect but unfairly casts doubt on the credibility of our institution,” said Gakombe.

The company reiterated its commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare through Ladnan Hospital, guided by professional ethics, transparency, and a robust governance framework.
