Five of Kenya’s brightest ICT students arrived in China to participate in Huawei’s flagship Seeds for the Future 2025 programme, which runs from July 21 to 26. The global initiative is designed to nurture the next generation of digital leaders through immersive technical training, cross-cultural exchange, and exclusive industry exposure. “We are honoured to facilitate this knowledge exchange. These students represent Kenya’s digital future, and we’re committed to equipping them with the tools and exposure needed to become leaders in Africa’s tech revolution,” said Michael Kamau, Huawei ICT Academy manager.
Who is representing Kenya in China? Top ICT students from top universities in the country have been selected to represent Kenya in the six-day programme. – Shem Machii Ngunjiri from Dedan Kimathi University of Technology – Sophy Cherono Rop from United States International University–Africa (USIU-A) – Huldah Mwihaki Kaura from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) – Mungai Erick Gachuhi from Moi University – Samuel Ochor Ogeno from the University of Nairobi What is Seeds for Future 2025 programme? The programme offers participants over 40 advanced courses in emerging technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital power. These sessions are not only theory-based but also involve hands-on learning experiences to develop practical, job-ready skills. Students are also treated to behind-the-scenes access to Huawei’s world-class R&D centres and innovation hubs and a guided tour of the DJI factory, which is home to some of the world’s most cutting-edge drone technology.
Across Kenya Fredrick Ndambuki, Secretary of Administration at the Ministry of Education, commended Huawei’s initiative and partnership in enhancing digital education and skills in the country. “Through initiatives like ‘Seeds for the Future’, we’re jointly creating opportunities for Kenyan students to gain world-class technological expertise. This collaboration directly supports our agenda to build a competitive, digitally skilled workforce that meets the demands of today’s global economy,” Ndambuki said. The programme doesn’t stop at technical skills. Participants also benefit from leadership development workshops, mock interviews, and résumé clinics designed to strengthen their professional readiness.
The students will also gain access to a global network of ICT experts and alumni, opening doors to future career opportunities. In addition, the students will take part in a roundtable on opportunities for entrepreneurship and careers in artificial intelligence, which will provide students with a platform to engage directly with global industry leaders and innovators. Since its launch in 2008, the Seeds for the Future programme has trained more than 15,000 students from over 140 countries, including hundreds from Kenya, and continues to play a key role in bridging the digital skills gap, promoting sustainable development, and cultivating a globally competitive tech workforce.
