Mombasa Stars Team Manager Ken Juma remains optimistic that his side can avoid relegation from the National Super League (NSL), despite enduring a tough season plagued by inconsistent performances and financial strain.
Currently sitting third from bottom on the NSL table with 23 points from 29 matches, Mombasa Stars are tied on points with Muhoroni Youth and just four points clear of bottom-placed SS Assad from Kwale County.
With only four home matches remaining, Juma is confident the team can grind out the results needed to stay afloat.
“We know the situation is tough, but we are determined to fight. Our target is to win all our remaining home matches and keep our hopes alive,” said Juma.
The Stars will face Samwest FC, MCF, and Vihiga United at home—crucial fixtures that could define their season. Away from home, they’ll take on Luanda Villa, SS Assad, and fellow strugglers Muhoroni Youth.
“We are more focused than ever to survive,” Juma added. “Mombasa Stars was there and will continue to be there in the NSL. We’ve gone through similar challenges in the past three seasons. Our fans should not be worried.”
The team has faced turbulent times since losing major sponsorship from Kenya Power three seasons ago. That loss hit not just Mombasa Stars but several NSL clubs, leading to instability both financially and on the pitch.
This weekend, they travel to face Luanda Villa in what is being billed as a make-or-break clash. Every point now is vital as the race to avoid relegation intensifies.
The situation is especially critical for the Coast region, which is in danger of losing two of its representatives in the NSL, with both SS Assad and Mombasa Stars locked in the relegation zone.
There is, however, some positive news for football fans in Taita Taveta County. A recent court ruling reinstated Mwatate United into the league, after the team was unfairly displaced by Dimba Patriots in a move deemed unlawful. This decision breathes new life into Mwatate’s campaign and boosts the region’s presence in the league.
As the season heads into its final stretch, the pressure is mounting—and Mombasa Stars know that survival will come down to focus, grit, and a few must-win games.
