Siaya: Gunshots Rent the Air as Prisoners Stage Brazen Daytime Escape from Custody

Police in Siaya county have staged a manhunt after an inmate escaped from Siaya GK Prison on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 15. Police in Siaya are hunting down a 27-year-old man identified as Joseph Okombo who escaped from Siaya GK Prison (r) on Tuesday afternoon. The 27-year-old man identified as Joseph Okombo Otieno served a two-year jail term at the prison. How did Siaya inmate escape? According to the police incident report reported by Nation Africa, the inmate had planned his escape after duping the prison wardens and easily slipped off the prison walls. . Okombo who was the master planner had included two other inmates Fidel Omondi and George Akumu, who were rearrested after a failed escape. The three inmates ran in different directions to confuse the officers who eventually subdued the two and took them back to the prison. “The three inmates working at the prison farm ran to the nearby forest in different directions. The officers on duty mobilised a quick response and managed to rearrest the two accomplices of Okombo, Fidel Omondi, and George Akumu,” the police stated. How did Siaya GK Prison wardens get duped? The three are said to have taken the chance after being told to clean a garden belonging to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology next to the prison.  To counter their plans, the wardens were forced to fire bullets in the air for a while to scare the inmates. A witness further said the two followed suit with their colleague, before the officers noticed their absence and opened fire which lasted for awhile. The two Omondi and Okumu sustained bullet wounds from the altercation and were admitted at the Siaya County Referral Hospital under tight security. A thorough search of Okombo a resident of Ambira village within Ugunja Sub-County has begun by the police.
