Mackenzi's wife granted Sh600,000 bond in Shakahola deaths case
Shanzu Magistrate Court has granted Rhoda Maweu, wife of suspected cult leader Paul Mackenzi, a Sh100,000 personal bond and an additional Sh500,000 as a surety.
She had been in custody for 62 days, since her arrest on May 2.
Shanzu Senior Principal Magistrate Yusuf Shikanda ruled that the State had failed to prove why she was being held together with her husband and 28 others over the Shakahola deaths.
She will be required to report to any police station when called upon.
However, Mackenzi and 16 other co-accused persons, who had been arraigned between April 15 and May 2, will continue being held for another 30 days.
The court granted the State their prayers to hold the suspects for 60 days. However, this will be from June 2.
The court also ruled that the 11 additional suspects, who were first arraigned on June 3, would be held for only three additional days.
The State would have to prove why they should continue holding them after spending 30 days in police and prison custody.
Mackenzie, his wife and 16 others were first to be arraigned on May 2.
The 12 additional others were arraigned a month later on June 2.
The court has ruled that the first lot of 18, excluding Mackenzie's wife will continue being in custody for additional 30 days.
The state had asked for 60 days. The court granted them 60 days, but to begin from June 2.
The additional 12, who were first arraigned on June 2 (one died, so the remaining 11) would be held for additional three days.
The State has been asked to prove why it should continue holding them. BY THE STAR
