Wanga urges action on Lake Victoria fishermen’s security

Homa Bay County Governor and ODM party chairperson, Gladys Wanga, has called on President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to prioritize discussions on the security of fishermen in Lake Victoria during the upcoming Piny Luo festivals in Siaya County.

Speaking at Ngeri Primary School in Suba South constituency, Governor Wanga underscored the need for urgent and collaborative efforts to address the growing insecurity in the lake.

She emphasized that safeguarding the welfare of fishermen is critical to ensuring the sustainability of livelihoods that depend on the lake’s resources.

Amid these concerns, the county government has unveiled a transformative initiative for local fishermen with the introduction of 12 fish cages valued at KSh 30 million.

Each cage, with a capacity to hold 35,000 fish, is set to significantly enhance fish farming in the region.

This development is expected to improve the productivity and income levels of fishing communities.

The Beach Management Unit in Homa Bay has expressed optimism about the impact of the new fish cages, noting that the investment will be instrumental in boosting the overall output of the local fishing industry.

As the Piny Luo festivities approach, there is growing anticipation that regional leaders will take decisive steps to address the security challenges affecting Lake Victoria, ensuring a safer and more prosperous future for fishermen in the region.
